Luckily I have a very understanding husband.  This week Grand Dad Al treated me to a special offer on Knitcrate – the subscription yarn site. I received two boxes of yarn. One that was the May box and one for the June box – OOOOO Yarn Heaven!

If you’ve not heard of KnitCrate and you are a knitter, a crochet or other yarn crafter then I’ll tell you a little more about it.

KnitCrate is a monthly subscription site for us yarn lovers. You can buy one month or sign up for it monthly, it’s up to you. Crates or boxes start at just $19.95 that included postage and packaging or just over £15 for us here in the UK. The boxes I got cost $24.99 or around £18.90 for two hanks or skeins or yarn that is so gorgeous. This option is called KnitCrate Membership Box.

In this box you receive two hanks or skeins of yarn, two exclusive to KnitCrate patterns, (one for knitters and one for crocheters), world wide posting – this amounts to around $63 or £47.50+ and costs $24.95 or around £18.90. We all know how much a skein of lovely yarn is, so to receive two for that price is really good value.

May KnitCrate

May’s theme was Contemporary. My box had two skeins of La Brebis yarn. This yarn is fingering weight and consists of 40% Merino Wool, 40% Peruvian Highland Wool and 20% Nylon in the colour Gray Twist. It’s lovely and soft. Each skein has 437 yards of yumminess.

The patterns that came with this box are a cabled clutch bag to crochet, that I saw some people using as a cover for their iPads or similar devises, designed by Marie Segares and to knit a shawl/wrap called DAXIS by the designer Susanne Hogl. You get to access these patterns on the KnitCrate website and they are a KnitCrate exclusive.

This shawl/wrap has a checkered board pattern, that you can’t see on the little photo, but makes it interesting and fun to make. I’m glad they didn’t go with anything too fussy as a nice simple pattern will make this yarn look amazing and stand out on its own merit.

June KnitCrate

I looked at the preview on the KnitCrate website and when my box arrived and I was opening it. I felt a bit like Harry Potter, when he had arrived at Hogwarts for the first time and was wearing the Sorting Hat. I was going “not yellow, not yellow”. I love the brightness of the yellow, but it really wasn’t a colour I knew I would use, I got the one I really wanted, the lush red called Smacker. I’ve always loved red and I used to have my nails painted fire engine red all the time, it was like a lucky colour for me.

Junes theme is for the month is Ice Scream, fresh neon’s and icy brights will have you screaming for more. The yarn is called Vidalana with 437 yards in each skein.  It is made up of 75% Superwash Merino 15% Nylon and 10% Cashmere, I wish you could feel how lovely this yarn is. With the Cashmere it is so soft and perfect for around the neck or face so I’m thinking of making the shawl pattern that comes in this months box from designer Taiga Hilliard called Minty Fresh. The crochet pattern from Kahlurah Hudson is called Lemoncello.
