Admiral Young Driver Experience (for 5 – 10 years old)
I was a bit curious as to how Jamie who is 6 year old was going to partake in a Admiral Young Driver (http://www.youngdriver.com) experience, all became clear on the day when we arrived. For the younger children who aren’t old or tall enough to drive real cars, they have miniature electric cars to whizz around a small course laid out by cones.
The aim of this driver experience seems to ideally focus on steering control. The track has purposefully short bends, so the student has to learn the 10-2 hand position and also learn how to feed the steering wheel through the hands and not cross them (that’s a failure in a real driving exam).
After the teacher was happy with Jamie knowing that he had learnt all that he could, he then got the chance to get in the car with his instructor to experience his first ever driving lesson. Later, I even got the chance to join in this experience with Jamie. I sat next to him in the car and enjoyed being ferried around by him for a change!
I personally really enjoyed this experience with Jamie knowing that this experience will stay with us both for many years to come.
Overall Thoughts
Overall we think that this is a great idea to start children out on a safe journey of driving for when they become older. The lessons also included who had right of way at junctions and roundabouts, explaining the reasons why and the dangers and consequences of not abiding by the rules. At the end of the session Jamie was even given his own driving licence!
The tracks are well laid out and it wasn’t too busy/crowded. For us arriving by car there was plenty of space for parking and we found the location very easy to find.
The one and only downfall I could pick up on was the instructor didn’t seem very good at being assertive. Jamie got a little upset when learning how to feed the steering wheel through his hands and the instructor didn’t quite know how to handle it (maybe it was just my child who knows!)
Jamie has always been pretty keen on learning about cars since a young age, so when we are in the car I learn him bits as I drive, I feel gradually teaching him at this age he will know much older as he grows and goes to take his real test!
I would recommend this experience for young drivers as Jamie really enjoyed himself, as did I and he has gone back to school telling his friends all about his brilliant driving he did with dad!

About Admiral Young Driver
Rob and Jamie had a great time with Admiral Young Driver scheme at Newcastle Race Course. Admiral Young Drivers hold days through out the year at various venues all over the UK mainland. The price for a “Firefly” lesson that Jamie had is just £19.95 for 20 minutes. They have a wide range of course for young or youth drivers, aged 5 – 17, you can even have a Young Drivers Birthday Party!
You can buy gift vouchers for a driving experience, that would make a great present for passing exams, becoming a teenager, Christmas or just because – well,we don’t always have to have a reason to buy someone a nice gift do we.
Admiral Young Driver work with many young and older people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities, including those who are deaf, have prosthetic limbs, are in wheelchairs, are blind, or have learning disabilities or neurological disorders. Some may never have thought they’d have the opportunity to experience what it is like to drive a car, and some may never be able to drive on the roads. Some of their pupils have been told they will need to wait several years before being able to apply for a provisional license, which can be hard when friends can go ahead and learn. So this gives them an opportunity to see what it’s like for themselves. It can really help build self confidence.

I love travelling by plane I love the up and down bit of flying love the sensation
I used to love going for little trips in my uncle and aunt’s VW campervan. I thought it was so cool. I’d love to own one and I’m sure the kids would love it, but it would probably be a bit of a squeeze for four of us to sleep in it.
Helicopters. I recently flew in one and found it a brilliant experience.
