Dixit Board Game Review by Asmodee

Dixit

Asmodee’s Dixit is a family friendly game where every picture tells a story – but what story will your picture tell?

Dixit is the lovingly illustrated game of creative guesswork, where your imagination unlocks the tale. In this award-winning board game, players will use the beautiful imagery on their cards to bluff their opponents and guess which image matches the story.

Guessing right is only half the battle – to really succeed, you’ll have to get your friends to decide that your card tells the story! Every turn, the storyteller will call out a short phrase or word to match the image on his card. Then each player will choose the card that most closely matches that phrase, and then everyone must guess which card the storyteller saw when he invented his brief tale.

Correctly guess the storyteller’s card, and you’ll move ahead. Convince everyone else that your card is best, and you’ll do even better Fun for everyone!

Dixit Contents of the box

Contents of the box

  • Inside the box we are presented with a built in scoring track, which is quite handy so it stays in position with the box throughout the game
  • 84 Image cards
  • 36 voting tokens in 6 different colours numbered 1-6
    6 wooden rabbit meeples

Setting up Dixit

To start the game , each player chooses a rabbit piece and places it on the space 0 on the scoring track.

There are 84 image cards, shuffle these and deal 6 to each player, and the remaining cards will be left in a deck.

Dependant on the amount of players playing, you then need to choose the correct amount of Voting Tokens. i.e. 4 player game choose 4 tokens. 5 players, 5 tokens. and 6 player game plays with 6 Voting Tokens.

How to play Dixit

Keeping your cards to yourself now without showing anyone in the group.

First we need to choose a player in your group to be the storyteller for the first round.

Choosing a card for your storyteller

Looking at the 6 cards, the storyteller will now make a story using one of the cards that they are holding. Saying the sentence aloud without actually showing the card they are retelling.

I.e. Storyteller chooses anchor card below saying just the word ‘Golden’, for golden sands…

The goal of the game

So in your group of players now, is to find out which image card on display is the one described by the storyteller.

Each player secretly votes for the card that they believe belongs to the storyteller by placing a Voting Token with the desired number face down in front of them.

When everybody has voted, all the voting tokens are revealed and placed on their corresponding image cards.

Two rules to remember here, is that the storyteller doesn’t get a vote at this part, nor can anyone vote for their own image card!

How to score the round and move on?

If all the players find the storytellers image, or if none have found it, then the storyteller doesn’t score any points at all and everyone scores 2 points.

In any other case, the storyteller scores 3 points and so do the players who found their image.

Each player, except the storyteller, scores 1 point for each vote that was placed on their image.

Any points that you collected this round, you now move your rabbit this many spaces on the game board.

Remember to draw a new card to assure you are starting the next round with 6, the play continues clockwise throughout.

Ending the game

There are 30 spaces on the game board, so you will continue going through the rounds playing the cards until you collect enough Voting Token points to score a total of 30!

Our thoughts

Asmodee’s game Dixit is a wonderfully simple game, playable by nearly anyone with whom you share a common language. With a fantastic range of beautiful illustrations and rules that can be understood by children and adults alike, Dixit will appeal to anyone with an imagination.

It comes as no surprise that Dixit won the Spiel de Jahres award for game design in 2010. It is brilliant and simple, beautiful and imaginative, and fun for all.

We have really enjoyed this game, even at some times it leaves us stumped as to what word or phrase to say, as we don’t want to make our phrase to be to simple, so trying to find a more obscure word or phrase for your card can be quite tricky, but definitely worth while when you are raking the points in and moving your rabbit further along the board.

The game has been great fun and it gets better every time we play, it took us a few tester rounds to get used to it, but it really is a winner now! Available to buy from Amazon Website
