Baby CPR
As a parent one of our biggest fears is that our baby/child stops breathing. yet most parents don’t know how to administer CPR to their baby or young children. St John Ambulance have issued these statistics:
- • An unconscious and not breathing child is the most frightening scenario for three out of four parents (74%)
- • Yet only one in four parents (26%) would know how to correctly administer baby CPR
- • Most parents who know first aid (62%) learnt it through a workplace first aid course – yet baby CPR is different to adult CPR (for instance, you need to cover the baby’s nose and mouth when doing puffs, and you use two fingers to give pumps to the chest)
- • Only one in four (26%) parents have learnt first aid specifically for babies
They have released this video, with a song to help you to remember ,should the need arise, hopefully we will never have to use it but better safe than sorry.
I have to admit to not knowing how to do this, but after watching the video a couple of times I feel I’ve got it.

This follows on from last years “The Chokeables” campaign, that showed parents how to help a choking baby or young child.
Over 40% of parents told the St. John Ambulance that they themselves have witnessed their own baby choke and when they were quizzed on the first aid & found that almost four-fifths didn’t know what to do in this situation.
St John Abmulance said “We know parents have their hands full, so we’ve made a short memorable video, The Chokeables – featuring the voices of David Walliams, David Mitchell, Johnny Vegas and Sir John Hurt – that shows people how to help a choking baby.”

Hopefully none of us will ever have to put this into practice, but it’s better to have the knowledge just in case.
