Coronavirus Lockdown Crafting – Knitting
Hi all,
I know it’s been ages since I have been around but needed some head space time. Glad to say I now feel so much better. More settled in myself. Didn’t expect it to take seven months, but with the corona virus and having to shield since the end of February until now really.
I’ve only been outside my front door once and that was to go to start my new treatment at Wynthenshaw Hospital near Manchester. I picked the really REALLY Thursday last month, too go out an severe asthmatic wearing a mask. Yes I did try to pass out coming out of the hospital, but luckily Grandad Al came to my rescue.
I’ve been doing quite a bit of knitting and crocheting during the lock down, using up all my odd bits of balls and making lots of things including a box full of preemie hats and cardigans from a really easy patterns that I have memorised now I’ve made that many! I also made a good few of the teddy hero bears, started a new shawl and lots of other bits and pieces.
Baby and Preemie Cardigans and Hats
I found at the beginning of the lockdown I needed really quick items that I could finish in one session. So the cardigans came hot off my needles. They really took little amounts of time and yarn I’m talking 22 grams for a small preemie cardigan.
I found all my patterns on the Ravelry website, they have a very wide selection of knitting, crochet, machine knitting and loom knitting. So simple to find items to make. There are a lot of free patterns as well as paid for ones.
I had lots of ends of skeins, some almost a full one but most less than half of a full skein. I mean I had a bag full. So I thought as I couldn’t do anything to help with the CoVid-19 I could at least help out else where with my knitting and crochet talent.
I first made this 3-6 months cardigan. It is called the Babbity Baby Jacket by Marianna’s Lazy Daisy Days and is a free pattern.
The colour is a lovely mint green with orange strawberry shaped wooden buttons, I really like this look and it knitted up in next to no time. It is a top down knit pattern with the sleeves being the last to work. The only sewing to do is to sew up the sleeves and adding the buttons. That’s it. Which is perfect for me as I hate the sewing up of seams. It’s also not one of my strong points.
Jack & Jill Cardigan and Hats
The Jack & Jill Premature Cardigans are also patterns from Marianna’s Lazy Daisy Days. Again made top down. This cardigan also comes in baby sizes 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, ad 9-12 months, as well as in preemie baby sizes small, medium and large. I made mostly medium and a few small. The medium size takes about 28 grams of DK (double knit) yarn and the small taking just 22 grams.
I used all acrylic as that is what my local hospital prefers, for easy care.
The Jack & Jill Hats
I can’t describe to you how cute these little hats are. They are mostly in the Jack & Jill pattern come in baby sizes 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, ad 9-12 months and premature sizes small, medium and large and micro-preeimie also. Lots of sizes for this easy, quick to make kntting pattern
Here are some of the hats I have made. I’ve put my Tesco Clubcard in so that you get an idea of the sizes.
I’ve made nearly one hundred different items. My bag of oddments of yarn is right down now, I feel very productive.
What have you been creating during the lockdown?

I absolutly adore homemade knitted baby clothes! My girls had clothes and bkankets knitted by my nan. I used to love the cardigan sets with the hat and booties to match and the Arran cardigans.
I know I was the same myself when the kids where little, especially when I had the girls.
A friend of my Mum’s made my eldest a Thomas the Tank Engine jumper he loved it. I used to have to darn it so he could keep wearing it. Jane x
