Grand Daughter Update.
Mummy C had a scan yesterday and apparently our new grand daughter due in a months time is already weighing 6lbs 14oz! She’s not going to fit into new born size for very long. Luckily I’ve already been making larger items, although they are still so cute. I can’t wait for her arrival and going to see her.
Matching Hat
I’ve made a little hat that matches the two cardigans I posted about here. With the mini granny squares near the brim in alternate colours, it too minimal mint and lavender, with the cream as the main colour.
This was a different pattern than the hats I usually make that start at the crown and work to the brim. This pattern called for you to make the granny squares, sew them together like a head band, the double crochet (DC) in the gaps upwards to the crown and then under the granny square band to make a brim. I made my brim longer than the pattern so as it could be folded up as I prefer that look. The hat measures just over 12 inches around. I hope her head will fit!
Poncho
Seeing as she will be a Spring baby I thought I’d try to make her a poncho that Mummy C can just pop on her in Summer (yes I’m convinced we will have one this year!) in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is cooler.
I’ve made a row near the top for a ribbon or a cord, but not sure as yet if I will put one in. Always worried about ties near the neck of a little one. If I make another one I’ll definitely leave a gap in the neck front to close with a button & loop.
It took, almost exactly, a 50 gram ball. The wool I used was Magic Double Knit from PoundWorld. It was a buy 2 get 1 free so was a total of £2.00. I love the way this wool changed colour as you crochet.
I can’t wait to me her. To see her personality as she grows. Hopefully we will be able to go over to see her soon after she’s born. Mummy C has had enough of being pregnant now and just wants it all to be over. I remember that feeling well, that last few weeks always seem to be the longest.

My mum crochets beautiful blankets for my daughters, I absolutely love the poncho you have made it is very colourful, she’s going to be a big baby, my son was 5 weeks prem and weighed 6lb 15oz, he would have been a big baby if full term, his sister was 8 days over and only 7lb xXx
I have SEVEN grandkids in 2 states. I’ve done PLENTY of hooking, lemme tell ya!! Unfortunately, I don’t get along with the far away DIL but I managed to make enough beanies, scarves and fingerless gloves for the older 2 boys that I know they’ll share with their younger brother and hopefully tell him their Nana made it special.
Meanwhile, here in TX, there’s not much call for a lot of crochet things for kiddos. I’ve learned to make airy cotton hats with floppy brims, in bright, Spring and Summer colors, for boys AND girls. They LOVE them! My oldest grandson also likes variegated yarns for knee-high boots. Go figure! He had me make him one pair, and it’s lasted him 2 yrs so far! Baby girl likes the hats, the brighter the better. Finding bright cotton yarns is a challenge though. Most of it isn’t good quality unless you have a good budget, and this disabled grandma doesn’t. But patience is a well-developed virtue and I’ve found some sales, I’ve stocked up. Will do again.
Thread is GREAT for ponchos for little ones, did you know? As long as you DON’T leave gaps that are big enough for little fingers or toes to get caught in or for them to do much damage. I once made a mini scarf for the youngest. Came out beautiful and Momma loved it for pictures! Colors are almost limitless as well. More than in cool cotton, in worsted weight.
Sorry to have rambled on! This post just brought back a flood of good memories. I miss my grandbabies. I hope you’re having the time of your life with yours!
Awww so sorry you don’t get on with your DIL, it’s hard when there are tensions in the family.
I love making things for all my grandchildren, up to six here now! It’s great being g able to make them something they treasure, but sadly sometimes its cheaper to buy it ready made. I got one of my grand daughters a lovely wooly jumper with a heart in for £2.50, about four US dollars from Asda our Walmart, its fabulous quality. I can’t compete with that.
I have a tight budget to but sometimes get really lucky in thrift shops or even EBay!
