Did you know that in kids’ media, only 2.9% of characters are black, boys are twice as likely to take the lead. In cartoons, 0% of princesses are coders, boys are twice as likely to take the lead, 73% of characters have white Caucasian skin (compared to only 15% of people in the world!), and 92% of female characters are underweight. Plus, not one superhero recycles. That’s not right. There’s other crazy stuff going on too. Why is a tub of posh ice cream made in England more expensive than a new T-shirt made in China? It doesn’t make sense. Stories shape how we think about ourselves and the world. From the moment we pop out of the womb, we’re bombarded with subtle and not-so-subtle messages about our gender, race, sexuality and visibility. Currently, those stories show us that if you’re white and male, you’re more visible. They tell us that if you’re a girl you should be an air stewardess, not a pilot, and if you’re a boy you can’t like pink. That’s why the Children’s Intelligence Agency (C.I.A) was created. Adults can be boring, and say stupid things about how nothing ever changes; they don’t always tell the truth, and sometimes they don’t even notice what’s going on… and they certainly don’t ask nearly enough questions.
That’s not right. This needs to change. We’ve created Detective Dot to inspire the next generation to be coders, not Kardashians. If anyone can get to the bottom of this nonsense and really make a change to this world, it’s kids.
Detective Dot
Secret agent for the CIA, nine-year-old Dot loves all things tech. But, she knows having a smartphone means nothing if you don’t have a smart brain to use it!
Drone
A small flying robot, Dot’s programmed Drone to to do all sorts of cool spy stuff. Unless she’s low on battery, has a bug, or worst of all – can’t get signal (cue rage mode).
Tumble
Tumble used to be a designer t-shirt, and he won’t let anyone forget about it. He only stops talking about himself when he’s posing for selfies, and his silliness often lands the gang in trouble.

What is the CIA?
Aimed at smart kids aged 8+ the book and activity pack is delivered in a Top Secret envelope addressed to your child, with a personalised invitation to join the C.I.A (The Children’s Intelligence Agency). The C.I.A are a shadowy group of child geniuses whose mission is to use technology to investigate global mysteries, injustices and rotten teachers. No-one ever suspects the kids, which is how the C.I.A has managed to bring down some of the most sophisticated criminal networks in the world.
The book is the brainchild of Sophie Deen founder of kids edtech company Bright Little Labs. With coding now a compulsory subject for kids aged 5 and above, the company’s mission is to inspired kids, especially girls, into technology and coding, using cool female role models, stories and personalised missions.

Jake really loves that he is now part of the C.I.A. and has even wanted to take his Membership Card to school to show his friends
There are many different missions to complete, our first mission that Jake chose was ‘Spy Gadgets’. He is to plan a gadget for an agent to use. He loves creating so he went straight into making his creation for agents to use.
He searched the house for some materials that he could use for his mission. He has made this ‘gadget’ for his spies. It swims and sees under the water, the star on top lights up when it gets dark under the water and the axe can help any see creatures that might need help under the water.
Aimed at age 8+ this is an excellent pack for your child for a brilliant way at code breaking, Jake is only at 6 so struggled to understand the rest of the missions at the moment, but I will keep this away for him until he is a bit older. I believe that this is something that he will be interested in as he grows as his imagination is brilliant as he has just a creative mind.
Once the mission is complete your child can then ask a trusted adult to take a photo of their design and can post it or share it via social media or email.
