Cheerio Marvellous… You're No Longer Awesome

Family Clan Blog Neon words

We all know some words go out of fashion, I mean when did you last call some one a “ceorl” or paid your “pavage” for example, but I find it hard that words that are used common place are being replaced by the American influence on our language.

I bet you now say “Awesome”, when not long ago “Marvellous” or “Fantastic” would have been the words to say.

Here are ten words that have become more popular in the last few years

  1. Facebook
  2. Website
  3. Awesome
  4. Google
  5. iPhone
  6. Internet
  7. Email
  8. Smartphone
  9. Treadmill
  10. Essentially

Whilst these are now being used less

  1. Cheerio
  2. Marvellous
  3. Walkman
  4. Poll
  5. Catalogue
  6. Fortnight
  7. Fetch
  8. Pussycat
  9. Marmalade
  10. Drawers

Whilst I understand why Walkman isn’t as popular, I’m not sure how marmalade & drawers can decrease. What would I call my breakfast jam? Maybe it is because of changing in eating habits, perhaps it isn’t as popular as a jam anymore, not that I see any evidence in our house.

Our usage of the World Wide Web & advancing technology, has, obviously, made the newer words enter our vocabularies but should we replace words with other?

The pilot list for the Spoken British National Corpus 2014 project – put together by Lancaster University and Cambridge University Press – looks at conversation starting from the early 1990s up to the present day and is in its early stages.

I’m going to make an effort to use more words when I’m both talking & speaking from now on.  Let’s keep our wonderful & voluminous language growing, but not at the expense of certain words.
